RENTING AFTER FILING BANKRUPTCY IN SOUTH FLORIDA
Some landlords may routinely run credit reports on potential new tenants. While having a bankruptcy show up could occasionally negatively affect your rental application, it is not at all unusual for clients who have recently filed bankruptcy to successfully rent apartments, homes, etc.
HELPFUL TIPS FOR HANDLING RENTING AND BANKRUPCTY:
If you are already renting a place and wish to continue living there, there is generally no need to tell your landlord that you have filed for bankruptcy.
If you have not yet filed your bankruptcy case and plan on moving into a new rental, it’s often a good idea to set up the new rental before you file your bankruptcy case (that way you can answer “no” if asked if you’ve ever filed for bankruptcy in the rental application).
If you have already filed your bankruptcy case and are trying to get into a new rental, we’ve found that it’s always best to be upfront with the new landlord and explain to them how, due to circumstances beyond your control, you had to file bankruptcy. HOWEVER, due to your filing your bankruptcy, you are no longer saddled with any overwhelming debt and can now easily afford the rental payments!
